Sport HistoryRugby Union Read moreRugby Union CloseAt Rugby we play on the pitches where the game began. Rugby has a great tradition: 63 internationals (England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and South Africa) and 134 Blues have passed through its doors. Rugby currently has one of the strongest fixture lists in the country; Oundle, Harrow, Radley and Bedford play us on block afternoons, and the Cheltenham and Uppingham matches go back over 100 years. The School puts out 17 teams in the Advent Term (September to December) and 144 matches were played in 1999. XVs visiting Rugby recently include Sherborne, Sedbergh, Whitgift, South African College High School and The Southport School, Brisbane. In the last eight years, there have been Under 18 tours to New Zealand (twice), Australia (twice), South Africa and Fiji; the Under 15s have been to the Irish Republic. Included among the School’s 17 full-time coaches are Senior RFU coaches, coach to the England ‘A’ Under 18s, and ex-professional players. A B1(M) RFU referee is also on the staff. Senior players from Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints visit the School to coach on a regular basis. Pupils have played representative Football for some years. The School enters four Sevens tournaments in the Lent Term (January to March) at Under 18 and Under 16 level, including the Rosslyn Park Competition, where, two years ago, we reached the semi-finals. The House Match competition culminates in the oldest match in the world: the Cock House Final. |
